Canada Population Increased

In the year ending January 1, 2023, the total population increased by a record 1.05 million people to 39.57 million, with international migration accounting for approximately 96% of the increase, according to the statistics agency.

According to the agency, The increase, which helped Canada maintain its position as the fastest-growing G7 country, translates/corresponds to a population growth rate of 2.7% and such a rate would lead to the population doubling in about 26 years.

Since taking office in 2015, Canada depends on immigration to drive its economy and support an aging population, and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Liberal government sharply/dramatically ramped/ increased up immigration.

Ottawa has also been running/implementing special programs /schemes to temporarily take in people impacted by crises like the Ukraine war, instability in Afghanistan, or the recent earthquakes in Syria and Turkey.

Canada welcomed 437,180 new immigrants in 2022, and the number of non-permanent residents increased by a net of 607,782 people. Statscan said, Both figures are the highest levels on record and reflect “higher immigration targets and a record-breaking year for the processing of immigration applications”.

The agency counts both permanent and non-permanent residents in addition to net new births in calculating the Canadian population

Since September, total employment in Canada has been rising, with non-permanent residents being a significant contributor, according to the statistics agency.

Canada’s immigration ministry predicts that by 2036, immigrants will make up about 30% of the country’s population, up from 20.7% in 2011. Immigration accounts for almost 100% of the growth in Canada population labor force.

The Trudeau government’s three-year plan, which was announced in November, the government wants to continue increasing annual immigration targets, with a goal to grant permanent residency to 465,000 people in 2023 and increasing that goal to 500,000 people by 2025.
